How can I password protect a gmail folder?
0
I know you can't currently do this, but given the trend towards magic-links, I think it would be really, really, useful to be able to put magic link emails in a folder which requires you to put in your password again to access.
I saw this mentioned elsewhere, but the thread was closed, and ended on kind of a poorly thought out note.
In order to implement this, gmail would not have to have a special password recovery flow, or anything like that at all. You just put in the exact same password, and you have access for a short while.
A lot like `sudo`.
Most people leave their gmail logged in all the time because it would be insane not to, but that doesn't mean there isn't the occasional confidential item.
Also, as mentioned above: magic-links. It's becoming a new thing where instead of making a username/pass, you just put in your email and get sent a magic-link that's usually a lot more secure. If gmail made it so these links automatically went to a folder that required the password to be put it again, you wouldn't be able to simply get on the average users computer, click "send me a new link" or "forgot password", and then go to their already open email and have access.
These types of emails are super common, and a really, really easy way to get into any account on a computer logged into gmail.
By simply requesting the password once more before giving access to a folder with these types of emails, it would vastly, vastly, VASTLY increase user security for every single website on the entire internet.
So.... how can I do this? Who can I poke at to make it a thing I can do?
